Now, I’ll stop waffling…back to Alborford we go….Happy Easter everyone!
Easter Monday in Alborford, and Lisa and Nathan had gone to The Kings Head for some lunch. Lisa was convinced that Nathan was still seeing Laura, but rather than simply throw him out, she wanted revenge. Already comparing notes with Fiona, she knew that he’d be joining in on Max’s stag night, and was likely to use it as a cover for a night’s shenanigans!
‘You OK, babe? You’ve been a bit quiet this weekend?’
‘Yeah, I am tired, just need to get my head around the latest assignment that the dragon at college has doled out to us!’ She knew that she could BS just as effectively as Nathan!
‘Anyway, enough about me, what you up to tomorrow? What’s the latest venture?’ She asked her wheeler dealer lover. Since he arrived in Alborford to see his half brother, Phil Shaw, Nathan hadn’t stuck to one job. Being employed by one person or business really didn’t suit him. He liked to flit around from one thing to another, ducking and diving.
‘Well….I should be shifting some more of those internet goods, and am helping out a mate in Norwich tomorrow, he needs a hand in his computer shop,’ Nathan was always so smug about everything, as if he was the first person in history to ever control his own destiny.
‘Cool, as long as it helps pay the rent, eh?!’ Lisa stopped herself becoming aggressive.
‘You sure you’re feeling OK? I think you could do with some rest, darlin’!’
Nathan held her hand and she tried not to flinch.
‘I’ll be fine….has Max organised his stag do yet? Fiona’s talking about what to do for her hen night,’ Lisa steered the conversation around.
‘Oh, not yet, he’ll get it all arranged soon, should be a good night!’
‘Oh, I’ll bet it will be!’ Lisa laughed, sipping wine and looking Nathan up and down.
Jo and Kris were having a day of watching chick flicks on DVD to round off the Easter time.
‘That was such a soppy one, gets me every time,’ Jo sighed, wiping her eyes.
Kris looked at her for a while before she spoke what was on her mind.
‘All of those leading men remind you of Jack, don’t they?’
‘Don’t be silly!’ Jo laughed, partly at the gall that Kris had to come right out with it…but that was one of the things that she loved about her friend – never afraid to say what others were too scared to.
‘Hmmm?’ Kris stared more intently, waiting for the real answer to materialise.
‘Well, I suppose you’re right, but I’m not so sure it would be a good idea…’
‘Why not?’ Kris huffed.
‘Maybe Jack thinks that night was a mistake, he’s always seemed happier on his own…?’ Jo’s lack of faith in herself infuriated Kris sometimes.
‘Rubbish! He’s crazy about you! He only seems happier on his own, because he took a long time to get over his wife dying…you could be the woman to get him back in the saddle, as it were!’ They both laughed.
‘We’ll see what happens, I don’t want to wreck a good friendship with him though…’
Don and Josie were watching TV and tucking into left over Easter eggs that Fiona and Ros had left behind after Easter Sunday lunch.
‘Our first Easter without either of the boys living here, Don..’ Josie sighed.
‘That’s the third time you’ve said that this weekend. You saw them yesterday lunchtime!’ Don grumbled.
‘Alright! I’m just thinking about them more on Bank Holidays, when they were little boys, running around…and look at them now.’
‘Yeah, look at them,’ Don rolled his eyes.
‘Now we’ve got a grandchild, both of them living with their women, Max getting married soon…how things change….’
‘Some things don’t, you being a soppy so and so!’ Don laughed.
‘Oh, put a sock in it you!’ Josie shouted back, but she couldn’t help smiling at his comment.
That night, Richard and Rachel were getting to the end of a relatively calm Easter weekend. They’d been to see Rachel’s parents in London and arrived back late on Monday afternoon.
‘That was nice, I think Mum and Dad enjoyed it, they loved seeing Harry again. Shame that Deborah couldn’t make it though.’
‘Where was she?’ Richard grunted.
‘She’s in the States with her latest man, for a long and dirty weekend. I expect we’ll catch up with her soon though,’ Rachel carried on talking for some time, when she noticed that Richard hadn’t responded for a while.
‘Are you alright, honey?’ She asked, dreading what was coming next when she saw the look on his face.
‘Erm…I’ve been thinking over the weekend..’ Come to think of it, he had seemed preoccupied, but Rachel was so busy with Harry and her parents that she’d largely ignored him…but maybe that was part of the problem.
‘We’ve not been getting on too well lately have we?’ Richard asked, looking like his eyes were filling with tears..or was it just the way the light was falling on his face, thought Rachel.
‘No, but it’s just your work, isn’t it darling? Things will improve-‘ He cut her off in mid-flow.
‘I’m not so sure. I think we should separate for a while, and see how things work out from there.’
‘You’re serious, aren’t you?!’ Rachel asked, just as Harry let out a loud and gurgling laugh.
‘Yes. I am.’
