Val was out and about in Alborford, pottering around the shops and seeming as if she didn't have a care in the world. The reality was a completely different story however, she was a nervous wreck on the inside. Val was one of those people who was an expert in 'keeping up appearances', 'putting on a brave face' and so on. When her perfect make up went on in the morning, it really was a mask to protect her from the world, in more ways than one.
'Hi Val! How are you? Not seen you for a while!' Rachel called out from the doorway a few shops down.
'Hello, Rachel,' she felt herself groan inwardly, not wanting to have a conversation, but forcing herself to go through with it. The two of them walked towards each other, meeting in the middle of the High Street.
'I know it's none of my business...' Rachel began, with Val wondering what on Earth was coming next...
'Yes...?'
'Well, I just haven't seen Ray for a while...I see you popping out sometimes, but can't remember the last time I spotted you and Ray out together, or with the kids? Is everything alright at the moment?'
At that moment, Val felt like slapping Rachel around the face, but somehow managed to keep her composure and just calming replied -
'Things are fine, thanks for your concern,' Now most people would have let it lie at that point, but not Rachel, she decided to keep labouring the point...
'I mean, with Ray's alcohol problem going back so far and recurring so many times, I wondered if he'd fallen off the wagon yet again?'
Val was flabbergasted by the nerve of the woman.
'You know what Rachel, you said to begin with that it was none of your business...you're right, it isn't!' With that, she stormed off down the High Street, heels clacking as she went.
'Blimey, struck a nerve, clearly!'
