Jack and Jo were opening up
The Headless Pint for the lunchtime rush, except today there wasn’t much of a
rush on. Some of the Alborford regulars were quite wary of spending much time
in his pub, after the rape case against him had been dropped. He felt quite
downhearted that his beloved Pint wasn’t hectic with lunchtime trade today, but
it had only been a couple of days since the news had spread, after all. At the
end of the day, Jack thought, people are pretty fickle and would soon be back
when their favourite haunt called out to them again.
‘You alright?’ Jo stroked his
hand as they moved behind the bar. After being his alibi for the night of
Lisa’s rape, claiming to have spent the whole time with him (when Jack couldn’t
remember a thing), Jo had grown closer to him in a very short space of time.
This time would tell if any real feelings were involved on Jack’s part….who
could be sure he wasn’t just showing extreme gratitude to her? One thing was
for sure though, Jo had fallen in love with him over a long period…and the
feelings she’d fought for quite some time were now spilling over into day to
day life…
‘Yeah, sure, never did like
this place when it was dead though…’ Jack sighed heavily.
Out of the customers that
were in though, Sam and Ros were amongst them, enjoying a leisurely lunch on a
day off for both of them.
‘It’s a bit quiet in here,
isn’t it?’ Ros asked, stroking Holly’s hair as she amused herself with a toy at
the table.
‘I wonder why that is!
Some people around here still think Jack raped Lisa!’
‘Keep your voice down!’
Ros hissed.
‘It’s a free country
isn’t it?! Anyway, it’s only saying what a lot of people are thinking!’
‘Well, I’ve always thought
he’s a decent sort of bloke!’
Sam
took a sip from his pint before replying ‘We don’t really know
him though, do we? We don’t know for sure that he isn’t capable of something
like that!’ Sam looked over at the bar and caught Jack’s eye..who immediately
knew he was being gossiped about and gave a nervous smile back.
‘Don’t
let it bother you, honey, everyone’s bound to gossip about it, they’ve got
nothing better to do with their sad and pathetic lives!’ Jo was immediately
fuming on his behalf, but Jack didn’t feel totally comfortable with it. She was
being a bit too intense for him right now.
‘It’s
alright, it’s not bothering me as much as you think,’ replied Jack.
Just
as Jack was thinking about going for a break to get away from Jo’s over zealous
comforting for a while, he noticed Nathan coming through the front door of the
pub. He marched straight over to the bar and everybody could see his was fuming
straight away.
‘I
want a word with you!’
