Now, I’ll stop waffling…back to Alborford we go….
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 2ND 2005
Ros was sat on the grass in Alborford Park, playing with Holly, when Rachel walked towards her and sat alongside her.
‘Hello stranger! How are you?’ Rachel and Ros had always been pretty close, but hadn’t seen each other much lately, largely due to the recent events in Rachel’s life, but now things were getting back to normal Rachel was keen to see her more.
‘Hiya…yeah, not too bad,’ Ros did her best to try and sound enthusiastic…but failed miserably.
‘C’mon, this is me you’re talking to, what’s wrong?’ Rachel asked, holding out a hand to a giggling Holly.
‘Got a few problems with Sam, that’s all, nothing you need to be hearing about,’ Ros sighed.
‘Why wouldn’t I want to hear about it?! We’re friends!’
‘You’ve had enough on your plate lately, I mean.’
‘Rubbish, things are OK now, and besides I don’t want to think and talk about my own troubles all the time. Go on, if you want to talk, talk to me.’
‘Well, I want to get back to work now that Holly’s a little bit older. You know, get back into working at the Leisure Centre, it’ll help me get fit again too,’ Ros replied.
‘You look a darn sight fitter than me since we had our kids!’ Rachel cried, in mock horror.
‘Yeah, anyway, I don’t want to think about having another baby just yet, things are good the way they are…’
‘And Sam wants another one?’ Rachel asked, and Ros nodded.
‘Well, he hasn’t got to carry it around for nine months and push it out, has he?!’
Ros laughed. It always amused her the way Rachel had about stating the facts. But her laughter soon stopped.
‘Sam won’t even talk to me properly now, we’ve had a couple of rows about it and as far as he’s concerned…well, it’s his way or nothing,’ Ros sounded even more downhearted now.
‘Well, sounds like a great way to conduct himself in a relationship! Who’s the child, Holly or him?! He’d better grow up before you have another anyway!’
Meanwhile, Sam was talking to Max, as they’d both arranged to have the same lunch hour and meet in The Headless Pint.
‘And she’s not prepared to listen to my side of things, it’s her way of things or not at all by the sounds of it!’ Sam moaned into his pint.
‘Typical woman,’ Max grunted, biting into a sandwich.
‘Yeah, well, she ain’t a typical woman to me, bruv. We’ve got to sort this out, it’s totally doing my head in.’
‘Try talking to her again…and don’t lose your temper this time! She’s reasonable, it’s not like she flies off the handle easily like Fiona, should be able to talk it through shouldn’t you?’ Max asked.
‘Of course, we’ve never had any trouble before, this is the first time we haven’t had plain sailing all the way!’
‘Well, it’s a serious business, babies and careers and all that…’
On the other side of the pub, Lisa had arrived for some lunch and was talking to Lil at the bar.
‘So you’re doing a lot better now then, my sweetheart?’ Lil asked, pouring a drink for her.
‘Oh yeah, much better thanks. Bits and pieces of my memory are coming back, just wish it all would. It’s not nice having part of your life that you can’t even remember.’
‘If only I could forget all about my first husband, eh darlin’?!’ Lil sniggered and they both roared with laughter.
Moments later, Jack walked into the bar area.
‘Hi Lisa!’
‘Hi…’ the words started to catch in Lisa’s throat, as a strange feeling washed over her again, the kind of feeling that she got when part of her memory returned before.
She didn’t know what it was that she was about to remember, but something very strange was going on…
