Now, I’ll stop waffling…back to Alborford we go….
MONDAY AUGUST 22ND 2005
Ros and Sam had decided to go to the coast for the day, both had wangled some time off. Sam was driving, as they headed through Norwich on the way to Cromer.
‘Alright, darlin’?’ Sam called out to Holly, as she gurgled away from her child seat in the back.
‘Mmmm, this is nice, getting away from Alborford and Rex Road for a while, it can get a bit claustrophobic sometimes.’
Ros laughed as they passed the Ramada Jarvis Hotel.
‘Remember when we stayed there once, to get a secret night away from everyone?’
‘Yeah, of course, we should do it again, send Holly to the grandparents maybe?’ Sam replied.
Then they were quiet again for a while, the kind of silence that you only have when you’re so comfortable with someone that it last for ages, and nobody’s bothered.
Back in Alborford, Val was having her nails done by Rachel in the Magnolia beauty salon.
‘So, everyone in the family doing well, Val?’ Rachel asked, just in the name of the general chit chat required in the salon. However, of course, Val immediately thought about their recent problems. And for some reason opened up a bit.
‘Well, Ray did have a bit of a relapse recently.’
Rachel stopped filing for a moment.
‘Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. How is he now?’
‘Much better, getting there. You know how it is, one step at a time. We’ve been through this a few times, but hopefully it’ll be the last time now…’
Val’s words tailed off, and Rachel was struggling for a moment. What could she possibly say next? What words would comfort someone, in a situation that she knew nothing about?
‘Yes, indeed. Would you like a coffee, Val?’ Rachel smiled nervously.
‘I’d love one.’
Later, Ros and Sam were sat on the beach, with Holly at their feet playing in the sand.
‘I’ve been thinking…I’d like to get back into some more work, back into being a fitness instructor, it’d do me good – in more ways than one!’
Sam began to feel annoyed straight away.
‘Well, I’ve been thinking too, maybe about us having a brother or sister for Holly?’
She couldn’t fail but pick up on his tone of voice, and tried to think her argument through before continuing.
‘It would be nice one day, but I really need to do something for myself, Sam. It’s time to get my career back on track…’
‘And it would be nice for us to make a family together too, but obviously that isn’t so important to you is it?’ Sam got up and stormed off across the beach.
‘Sam! Come back here and talk about it! Sam!’
