Now, I’ll stop waffling…back to Alborford we go….
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 10TH 2005
Nathan was sitting on a bench in Alborford Park. He had the afternoon off and decided to give Lisa some space and wander on his own for a while. He turned his head skyward to the sun, putting his sunglasses on.
‘Hello, how are you?’ He looked up and it was Laura.
‘Oh, hello,’ Laura thought to herself that it was the first subdued greeting she’d ever had from him. What had the recent events done to this jack the lad that she’d once thought she was in love with. And yes, that was the moment she realised that too.
‘So, how is Lisa doing?’ Laura asked, trying to keep the conversation as polite and formal as possible.
‘She’s doing OK, not too bad. It’s just that her memory isn’t coming back completely, it’s frustrating her a lot. I just hope that she remembers everything, no matter how painful…do you know what I mean?’
Laura sat down next to him.
‘Yeah, I do. Even if it’s painful, it’ll help her get back to normal…and they can catch the son of a bitch too!’
‘Exactly, because they don’t seem to be any closer to getting him without her memory coming back…’
‘Yeah…’ Laura didn’t want the conversation to run any deeper, but Nathan was about to decide that for her.
‘Look, Laura…about us,’ Nathan turned to her, taking the sunglasses off.
‘It’s OK, you don’t have to – ‘ but he cut her off mid-sentence.
‘Oh, but I do, otherwise we might both be wondering about where things are going. The thing is, Lisa’s attack helped me to decide a few things. That I really do love her. I think she might be “the one” as they say.’
Laura felt a bit annoyed that he’d beaten her to it, but was going to say her piece anyway!
‘I know, I’d kind of realised that. And it’s made me decide on a few things to…that I never loved you, Nathan, I was just infatuated with you,’ she sighed with relief.
The old Nathan would have exploded at the thought that she didn’t adore him, but he continued calmly.
‘Good. Well, you know what I mean. It’s good that you feel that way, and we can get on with our lives without messing it up for each other all the time. I’m glad we had this chat, Laura,’ Nathan smiled, as she got up.
‘So am I, you look after yourself…and Lisa. See you around,’ Laura touched his arm as she spoke, and then walked away towards the park exit.
