Now, I’ll stop waffling…back to Alborford we go….
MONDAY AUGUST 8TH 2005
Ray nervously put his key into the lock of the front door and turned it.
‘Ray! Ray! Is that you?!’ Val raced towards the hallway, and flung her arms around him and burst into tears. Moments later, he was crying too…
‘I’m so sorry, love,’ he sobbed.
‘Don’t be…you’re back now, that’s the main thing, we’re going to get through this together, like we always do…’
Later, Ray and Val were on the sofa, holding hands, feeling much more relaxed.
‘I don’t really know how it started again, it’s impossible to describe,’ said Ray.
‘You’ve been getting on alright at work, haven’t you?’ Val asked.
‘Yeah, it’s been fine, can’t be anything to do with that. It was around the time of Lisa Hudson’s attack, I just began to feel unsettled about everything, and the next thing I knew I was reaching for a bottle…’
Val tried to understand what he was saying, but couldn’t help have some disbelief.
So, the decline of Alborford society had driven him to drink again?! She decided not to vocalise this thought, in fear of offending him.
‘Don’t worry or stress any more. We’ve got through this before, and we can again, can’t we? Before you know it, everything will be back to normal, you’ll see. This family’s stayed strong through all the tough times we’ve had, and you needn’t think that we’re going to give up on that now,’ Val was prone to emotional monologues at times like this.
Ray nodded ‘I know, and we never would have got this far if it wasn’t for you being as strong as you are, love. This family would be nothing without you.’
Val gripped his hand tighter ‘Nor without you, Ray. I couldn’t go on if anything happened to you.’
Moments later, Laura came through the door, returning from a trip to Norwich.
‘Dad! You’re home!’ She hugged him so tightly that it started to hurt.
‘Yeah, I’m home, darlin’,’ he sighed, wanting to cry again.
‘I thought something terrible had happened to you!’
‘It’s all alright now, everything will be fine now. I’m never going to leave you again, honey,’ Ray stroked her hair, and hoped that this optimism was true, and that everything really would be alright from now on…
