Now, I’ll stop waffling…back to Alborford we go….
MONDAY AUGUST 1ST 2005
Ray hadn’t been home for a couple of days, and sat in his hotel room at the Travel Inn just outside Norwich. He’d had a huge row with Val after she’d discovered he’d been drinking again.
‘Oh, you stupid idiot, what are you doing?’ He muttered to himself, as he swigged from a bottle of whisky, leaning back on the bed. Ray thought it’d be a good idea to lie low for a couple of days. When would he ever get this drinking problem resolved? It had plagued his life for years now, and he just wished that he could knock it on the head once and for all….
‘Mum? Are you alright?’ Rhys asked Val timidly. She had been sat on her own at the kitchen table all morning, smoking and flicking through a magazine without reading a single line.
‘Yes, Rhys, everything’s fine, just need to be on my own for a while,’ she replied.
‘I know I’m only young, but if you want to talk about it, I’m always here for you, Mum,’ Rhys blinked back tears.
Val started to cry and he hugged her.
‘Don’t worry, he’ll be back soon!’
They sat down, side by side, at the table.
‘The trouble is, son, I don’t know if I want him to this time…’
Rhys looked shocked, and Val noticed his expression.
‘Well, how many more times can we go through this stress and worry, eh?’
Rhys thought about it all for a while, and he knew his mother was right. One of his earliest memories was seeing his father drunk, and he had affected the family too many times.
Nathan and Lisa were heading off to bed, leaving Max and Fiona watching TV in the lounge.
‘Think that’s enough terrorism and tornadoes for me for one day, goodnight guys,’ announced Lisa on her way out of the room.
‘Sleep well!’ Fiona cried out as they reached the bedroom. Max was too engrossed in the TV to reply.
About an hour later, they were both asleep, and Lisa was having a nightmare, tossing and turning…
‘NO!’ She cried out, waking up with a start, and frightening Nathan half to death.
‘Darlin’! What’s wrong?’
She was shaking like a leaf and started crying.
‘I saw his face! I saw his face!’
