Now, I’ll stop waffling…back to Alborford we go….
Rachel was in tears when Richard arrived home. He’d left the office as soon as he’d seen what was happening in London on the news.
‘Is everything alright, it’s not bad news is it?!’
‘Yeah, Mum and Dad are fine, but I was so scared when I couldn’t get hold of them at first! Dad wasn’t answering his mobile…and when I finally got hold of him, they’d both turned back away from Liverpool Street and headed home….’
‘Thank God darlin’…’ and Richard thought about those families that hadn’t had good news….
FRIDAY JULY 8TH 2005
Alborford had almost started to get back to some kind of normality after Lisa’s rape. Of course, everyone was still so very concerned, but that’s human nature, lives have to keep moving on day to day…
In fact, Lisa had regained consciousness and was talking to Nathan. She was still quite weak, and couldn’t remember anything.
‘How have you been feeling today?’ Nathan asked, holding her hand.
‘A little bit more with it,’ Lisa coughed.
‘Well, don’t try and be too lively at first, there’s plenty of time.’
‘No danger of that,’ she replied wearily.
Lisa hadn’t been told yet that she’d been raped, and wasn’t going to be told until she’d recovered more.
‘What happened to me, Nathan?’ She really couldn’t remember anything much, due to the blow on the head she’d received. Nathan had realised that she couldn’t remember the rows that they’d had either, just before the attack.
‘You were mugged, when you were in Hamborough….don’t think about it now, just try and rest, honey,’ he stroked her forehead, as she began to drop off to sleep again.
Kris and Jo were sitting in Alborford Park, taking a lunch break after their last exam.
‘Freedom at last!’ Kris cheered, swigging from a can of beer.
‘Not quite, we’ve got to get the results yet!’ Jo replied, always the more cautious one.
‘I’m glad that your mum’s candidates for housemate fell through! Gives us a chance to celebrate finals in style!’ Kris laughed.
‘It’s only a temporary reprieve, Kris, so make the most of it! Once Mum has something in her head, it’s not likely to go away very easily!’
‘Who will be placed in the Big Sister house?! And who goes? You decide!’ Kris cried in a Geordie accent, and they both fell about laughing.
‘Ray! I know it’s your day off, but time to get up!’ Val cried from the bottom of the stairs.
And upstairs, Ray was swigging from a small bottle of whisky, using breath freshener, and desperately trying to find a hiding place for the bottle, in case Val came upstairs.
‘Ray? Can you hear me?’
‘Yes, dear, I’m now getting ready!’ He was feeling guilty, and also mystified. He’d been doing so well, on the wagon for a while now. It was almost as if the stress of Lisa’s attack had pushed him into it. At least, that was the only possible explanation that Ray could come up with right now…
